Sometimes, professional sports careers don't pan out as expected, and that's the case for a talented goaltender who is now shifting his career aspirations.
In 2015, the Montreal Canadiens had high hopes for young goaltender Michael McNiven. However, after seven seasons playing in North America and overseas, McNiven has officially called it quits. He recently announced his retirement when he was appointed as an assistant coach with the Powell River Kings of the BCHL. The 27-year-old outlined his positive goals for his new coaching role.
"My goal is to create an environment where our players have the best possible chance to succeed both mentally and physically." says McNiven "Having played in all three levels of professional hockey in North America, I am well versed in the demands and challenges our team will face. I am committed to bringing my utmost effort and expertise to win a Fred Page Cup."
McNiven played just one NHL game in his career but is known for his fantastic attitude and was reportedly well-liked by his teammates. This makes his future in coaching very promising. While it's unclear what his long-term aspirations are beyond this stint in the BCHL, at 27 years old, he has plenty of experience and time to grow. We may see him make an impact behind the bench in the NHL one day.
