Tomas Tatar Opens Up On His Decision to Leave New Jersey
In a recent interview, Tomas Tatar gave some details on his decision to leave New Jersey and sign with the Avalanche.
Tatar Went Looking For More Term and Came Back Too Late
Tomas Tatar was one of the most recent NHL veterans to sign a contract over the summer, and recently he revealed the disappointing situation that led to his departure from New Jersey.
Tatar said that he initially was looking to sign somewhere for a longer term, as the Devils were only offering a 1-year deal. After testing the free market, the Devils decided to go a different direction and acquire Tyler Toffoli, leaving Tatar out on his own.

A one year offer from NJ was on the table but I refused since I wanted more term. I only realized later in free agency that it's not possible (to get more than a 1 year deal) this year. Then, Jersey signed Toffoli and that was it.
Tatar Has a Chip on His Shoulder Going Into His 13th NHL Season
Despite this unfortunate situation, Tatar will join one of the best forward groups in the NHL with the Avalanche and a team that is a real Stanley Cup contender. The Avalanche hope to get back on track this year after a disappointing season last year.
Tatar still has the ability to contribute, scoring 20 goals last season to go along with 48 points. This type of depth-scoring should go a long way with the Avalanche this season.
