The Toronto Maple Leafs need to make some key moves to become serious Stanley Cup contenders, and they've recently been linked to two surprising potential additions.
Despite strengthening their defense this offseason, the Maple Leafs haven't done much to boost their forward group. Now, there's speculation that the team is interested in veterans Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck, both recently waived by the New York Islanders.
Given that both players are in their 30s and have a history of low point production, these potential signings seem puzzling, especially with the fourth line already featuring Ryan Reaves and David Kämpf. If the Leafs are considering adding Martin and Clutterbuck for any other role, it makes even less sense.
However, it's known that Maple Leafs' GM Brad Treliving favors big, physical players. While many expect a trade involving Nick Robertson and one of these veterans, it's possible that the Leafs might take a low-risk chance on both Martin and Clutterbuck.
