The Philadelphia Flyers have started the process to terminate Ryan Johansen's contract, citing a "material breach."
The team didn't provide further details in their Tuesday announcement.
Johansen will be placed on unconditional waivers. If he clears, his contract, which would have paid him $8 million next season, will be terminated. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that Johansen is expected to challenge the termination through a grievance.
Johansen, 32, was traded to the Flyers at the 2024 deadline as part of the Sean Walker deal with the Colorado Avalanche but never played for Philadelphia. After the trade, Johansen informed the Flyers that he had a hip injury.
Flyers GM Daniel Brière commented in April, saying, "I don't expect him to be back. He doesn't think he can play hockey right now. We need to get him better to see if there's any chance of him dressing for the organization.»
According to a report, it appears that Johansen violated his contract earlier this summer when he re-aggravated an existing ankle injury while hoverboarding on the Ocean City Boardwalk.
Johansen has played in 905 NHL games over his 13-year career with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and Colorado Avalanche.
