Evgeni Malkin has expressed his desire to retire in Russia rather than the NHL.
At 37 years old, Malkin has two years remaining on his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Given the team's current standing, it seems unlikely that they will win another Stanley Cup during this period. Speaking to a Russian journalist, Malkin shared that while he has loved his career in Pittsburgh, he wishes to conclude his professional days back in his home country.
"It's hard to make plans about a return," he said. "I still have two years left on my contract with Pittsburgh. I need to play these two years and see how it goes. The main thing is no injuries, and if, as Pavel Datsyuk says, there's a fire burning, you can't go out and do the number without it."
This marks a shift from Malkin's sentiments two years ago when he expressed his intention to retire as a Penguin.
Evgeni Malkin said today he would like to retire as a #Penguins player. But.
«I understand it's a business. I love this city, I love these fans so much. But if the team wants young blood and new guys & says 'you should move on', I'm fine.
«I hope I retire here» @KDKA

Malkin has been a consistent performer for the Penguins, playing all 82 games for the second straight season and recording 27 goals and 67 points last year. However, it appears his ultimate wish is to finish his career in Russia.
