Just before the season commenced, Andrei Vasilevskiy underwent significant back surgery. An update on his recovery was shared today.

Vasilevskiy's Progress: Lightning Share Latest Update

Andrei Vasilevskiy was projected to be sidelined until the latter part of November following his surgery. Jon Cooper, the head coach of the Lightning, provided fresh insights today about Vasilevskiy's return.
«Yes, he's been great. Like I said you have to pull him down because he want's to do more and more and more. He's on schedule and looks great, his spirits are great. I can't put a time table on it, but a few more weeks, right around Thanksgiving time. That's what we're hoping, so nothing's changed there.»

If Vasilevskiy manages to return by Thanksgiving, it will be a timely boost to the Lightning's goaltending strength. However, this comeback brings about new challenges for the team.

Goaltending Surplus: A Challenge for the Lightning

At present, the Tampa Bay Lightning roster boasts 5 fit goalies, excluding Vasilevskiy. In the NHL, they have Jonas Johansson and Matt Tomkins. Additionally, they have Hugo Alnefelt, Pyotr Kochetkov, and Evan Fitzpatrick.
Evan Fitzpatrick is anticipated to join the ECHL once Vasilevskiy makes his comeback. This decision, however, will still see three goalies remain in the AHL. Despite all being worthy of game time, inevitably one will be benched.
Young talents Alnefelt and Kochetkov are part of the mix. Notably, Kochetkov is affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes, which might influence the Lightning's inclination to field him.
Upon Vasilevskiy's return, the Lightning will face the challenge of allocating game time amongst their array of goalies.
