A two-time Stanley Cup champion as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jon Cooper is among the most well-respected figures in the NHL.

However, after the Tampa Bay Lightning were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs by their state rival Florida Panthers, Jon Cooper made less than tasteful comments, which went viral on social media.

"We might has well put skirts on them then... I think we're letting the goalies off the hook."

Jon Cooper went full South Park Sarcastaball. The goalie interference calls are getting out of hand.

In today's end-of-season press conference, Jon Cooper got incredibly honest about the incident, and the effect of his comments:

Jon Cooper opens his presser addressing the «girls in skirts» comment from Monday night.

He says this has been harder than the loss. #GoBolts

Jon Cooper opened his press conference by apologizing for his goalies wearing skirts comments. «Quite frankly, it was wrong.» Said it has pained him more than the series loss. Especially with daughters at home. Wishes he could go back in time and take it back.

Social media firestorms are inevitable for events like this, and hopefully Jon Cooper has learned his lesson.

Despite his harmful comments, Jon Cooper has earned a two-year extension with the two-time cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, and he will be sticking around through 2025-26.

I'm told #GoBolts HC Jon Cooper had signed an extension and is under contract through the 2025-26 season.

Jon Cooper is assuredly sorry for these remarks, and it is rare to see such an earnest apology in the NHL. Despite his comments, he continues to be one of the most respectable people in hockey.
