William Nylander is having a career season, in a contract year where he is a UFA at seasons end. All the talk this year has been on if/when Nylander will sign, or if the Maple Leafs should just trade him mid-season or use him as a full-season free agent rental. All Nylander has done with each passing game is raise his value, making Toronto fans nervous.

Reports have the deal being close to finalized

On Tuesday afternoon Nick Kypreos dropped a William Nylander bombshell. On the Real Kyper & Bourne Show, on Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Kypreos said

"It's trending closer to the Leafs and Willy getting a deal done, is what I hear"

There have been conflicting reports this season, either saying that both sides are continuing contract negotiations or that the Leafs are looking to trade him. Kypreos talked that the Maple Leafs and Nylander's camp want to have the deal done before NHL All-Star Weekend that starts February 1st.

"The other belief is that it will be a number that's over [$11 million]. $11.25 million is the one that is probably mentioned the most. Times eight.

The other thing you gotta consider is that when the Leafs can frontload this and turn it into a $12 or $13 million upfront signing bonus, it's worth a heck of a lot more than $11.25 million. It creates greater value in real money."

It looks like a contract is heading in the right directions for Nylander to remain a Maple Leafs for multiple seasons.

Since we all know Nick Kypreos of "Shea Weber is retiring now" as Shea Weber then went on to play for another season and playoffs fame. It was reported that Elliotte Friendman backed up the report according to those that listened to the latest Sportsnet round table during the Leafs game.

Further to the report from Kypreos earlier, Friedman says he thinks a Nylander extension could happen as early as this week.

Nylander is having a huge season that everyone is talking about

For the Toronto Maple Leafs the player of the game this season tends to either be Austin Matthews or William Nylander. In 34 games, Nylander has 48 points, 17 goals and 31 assists. He was always seen as the fourth forward of the "Big four" but he could now easily be considered the second best forward.

It will be very interesting to see how the Leafs handle Mitch Marner's contract negotiation once/if Nylander is signed.
