The Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube lashed out at Auston Matthews and his line for a costly defensive mistake against the St. Louis Blues last night.
For the first time since he was hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach, Craig Berube faced his former team, the St. Louis Blues, in a game. Berube spent eight seasons behind the Blues' bench: two as associate coach and six as head coach. He notably won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2018.
Unfortunately for Berube, the night didn't go how he wanted it to. The Leafs lost 5-1 against the Blues. Despite Joseph Woll playing his first game of the season, the team couldn't rally together to beat St. Louis.
What didn't help is that the Leafs allowed two goals that could've easily been prevented in the game's first ten minutes.
Philip Broberg scored with a shot that Woll would've liked to get back. Even though his vision was obstructed by Pavel Buchnevich, an NHL goalie must stop that kind of shot.
Five minutes later, the Blues doubled their advance as Dylan Holloway capitalized on a massive defensive mistake. All players were near the boards battling for the puck. Holloway was waiting in the crease and received the puck alone in front of Woll.
As you can see, the Leafs' first line of Matthew Knies, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner was on the ice for both goals, including the second one.
After Hollway's goal, the players returned to the bench only to face an angry Craig Berube. He talked to them for a while and was visibly frustrated by the mistake.
