Auston Matthews and head coach Craig Berube watched the season slip away Saturday night as the Maple Leafs completely collapsed.
The 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators was a total disaster from the crease outward. The blue line failed to execute crisp passing, and the transition game evaporated after the opening shifts.
This marks three consecutive losses for Toronto since returning from the Olympic break. The effort level across the roster has hit absolute rock bottom.
Matthews did not mince words when addressing the media in a completely silent locker room. The captain knows this roster is playing well below its pay grade.
"It was embarrassing to be honest with you," Matthews stated bluntly following the final horn. "We have to have more pride in our play."
Those are heavy words from the franchise centerpiece. The lack of pushback on home ice was glaring.
Veteran defenseman Jake McCabe offered an even more graphic assessment of the performance. He summed up the night with undeniable accuracy.
Deadline Decisions Looming
McCabe acknowledged the team started with some jump. "A good first five minutes," he noted.
"...and then s**t the bed," McCabe concluded. That single phrase perfectly encapsulates the current state of this hockey club.
With three straight defeats, Toronto is now at an extremely high risk of missing the playoffs entirely. The math is rapidly turning against them in the Eastern Conference standings.
Management has effectively been forced into a corner. The Maple Leafs have firmly positioned themselves as trade deadline sellers.
Berube has tried everything from bag skates to making veterans a healthy scratch. Nothing has sparked consistent offensive output or reliable team defense.
The power play looks disconnected, and the penalty kill is bleeding goals at an alarming rate. You simply cannot win in this league without solid execution on special teams.
Front office phones will be ringing all week. Expiring contracts and depth pieces are officially on the block.
The current core has run out of runway. The impending road trip might be the last time this specific group shares the ice.
