The Toronto Maple Leafs will need to make some tough decisions before the start of regular season due to salary cap issues.
With just five days left to get under the salary cap before the season opener, the Leafs face some challenges. They are currently $1.069 million over the cap & are aiming to sign Steven Lorentz & Max Pacioretty to full time deals which would mean they need to free up space.
Reports suggest the team is actively shopping veterans Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf, who have cap hits of $2.1 million and $2.4 million, respectively. However both players have no trade clauses and that is limiting the teams they can be traded to.
Connor Timmins who is a 25 year old defenseman is also a trade candidate though the Leafs may want to keep him for depth due to their recent injury struggles on defense.
This year, unlike in the past, the Leafs' roster is still uncertain as players compete for spots. The decisions the team makes in the coming days could surprise fans, but if they can trade Jarnkrok and Kampf and bring in Lorentz and Pacioretty, it could be a move that sets them up for a deep playoff run.
