The Vancouver Canucks have surprised many this year as they are suddenly one of the best teams in the entire NHL. Their success has come in part due to the breakout performance by Quinn Hughes, who is an early favorite to win the Norris Trophy for league's best defenseman. Apparently though, he almost stopped playing defense altogether according to one former Canucks head coach.
Bruce Boudreau was recently on the NHL network where he revealed some shocking information about the defenseman. Apparently, while he was in Vancouver, someone in the organization wanted to turn Hughes into a center like his brother Jack.
As Boudreau discusses in the segment, it is a good thing that this never came to fruition. Luckily Boudreau himself had the foresight to refuse to have him play center and it is paying off for the team as Hughes leads defensemen in points this season. He likely would not be having the same success playing a position he's never played before.
