Legendary Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler is coming home, even if just for a day.
Alexander Edler will sign a one-day contract to officially retire as a Canuck on October 11, the team announced on Tuesday.
Edler, 38, played 15 seasons with the Canucks from 2006-2021, appearing in 925 regular-season games. He also played in 82 playoff games for Vancouver, including 25 during their 2010-11 Stanley Cup Final run, where he scored eight goals and 38 points in total.
«I consider myself lucky to have started my career with such an outstanding organization, in this amazing city, with the best fans in the NHL," Edler said in a statement released by the team. "Finishing my NHL career where it all began is something very special for myself and my family.»
Drafted 91st overall by the Canucks in 2004, Edler scored 99 goals and 310 assists in his career. He holds the franchise record for most games (925) and points (409) by a defenseman, with 117 of those points coming on the power play.
The Östersund, Sweden native spent his last two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, and over his 17-year NHL career, he played in 1,030 games.
