During what seemed like a routine morning practice for the Washington Capitals, Alex Ovechkin had to leave the ice after an apparent injury.
The Capitals' captain cut his session short just minutes after it started, completing his warm-up before pulling back mid-drill, showing signs of discomfort. Ovechkin quickly skated to the bench, received support from his teammates, and then headed to the locker room.
So far, he hasn't returned to the ice, and it's unclear if he's dealing with an injury that might affect his participation in training camp, which starts Thursday. Veterans are set for off-ice testing and physicals on Wednesday.
Ovechkin, who turns 39 on Tuesday, is entering his 20th NHL season. He recently returned to the U.S. after training in Russia, and with 843 career goals, he is just 42 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL record.
