Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was playing in a high-profile hockey game in Russia, known as the "Match of the Year," when he suffered a knee injury.
This all-star game featured the best Russian players from the NHL versus the top Russian players from the KHL. During Sergei Mozyakin's farewell match, Ovechkin had to be removed due to a knee injury.
Fortunately, the injury doesn't appear to be serious. Reports indicate that Ovechkin will likely need about a week of rest before he can resume training. Despite the game being non-physical, the decision to remove him was made out of caution.
"This injury is not too serious and did not prevent Ovechkin from playing in the Game of the Year a week ago," said a source from Match TV.
"But now Alexander has decided to take care of himself so that he can begin full training in 10 days."

Considering the circumstances, 10 days of rest isn't too bad, and Ovechkin should be ready for the start of training camp in about eight weeks.
Last season, Ovechkin scored 31 goals and 34 assists in 79 games for the Washington Capitals. He is now just 41 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal record.
