Logan Thompson, the newly acquired goaltender for the Washington Capitals, was recently spotted at practice with his new pads, which have stirred up some controversy online.

Many fans noticed that the design of Thompson's pads bears a striking resemblance to the Confederate Flag, sparking backlash.
Thompson, who was traded from the Vegas Golden Knights for two third-round draft picks, was seen wearing these new pads at a Capitals practice facility. The red, white, and blue colors, along with the stars on the pads, have drawn criticism, with some fans expressing shock and disappointment, arguing that the design references a controversial part of American history that has no place in hockey.
However, the resemblance might be unintentional. The design seems to mimic the color scheme and stars of the Capitals' alternate jersey, as seen in photos of Alexander Ovechkin wearing it. Thompson likely aimed to match the team's jersey, rather than evoke the Confederate Flag.

It remains to be seen if Thompson will change his pads after the uproar, but the controversy has certainly put a spotlight on the issue.
Logan Thompson, who was undrafted and signed by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2020, has played 103 games in his career, with a record of 56-32-11, a 2.67 GAA, and a .912 save percentage.
