The Toronto Maple Leafs received a significant setback to their roster losing one of their key players due to injury over the All-Star break.
Forward David Kampf Sidelined Due to Injury
While the All-Star break typically offers players a chance to recuperate, it proved insufficient for Leafs forward David Kampf. Coach Sheldon Keefe revealed that Kampf sustained an injury just before the break, and it didn't improve during the time off. Consequently, he will undergo an MRI and won't be available for the upcoming game.
"He got banged up a bit just before the break," shared Keefe. "They weren't happy with how it settled down over the course of the break. He's getting an MRI today. Unavailable for tomorrow, day to day at this point until we find out more."
This injury deals a significant blow to the Leafs, especially considering Kampf's role in the team's depth and penalty kill, even though he may not be a prolific goal-scorer.
Leafs Will Face Challenges With Their Bottom Six
With injuries to both Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok, other depth players on the Leafs roster such as Nick Robertson and Ryan Reaves will have the opportunity to step up.
However, the injuries underscore the Leafs limited depth beyond their top-six players. The absence of Jarnkrok and Kampf raises questions about the team's depth, and it remains to be seen if this prompts any strategic moves ahead of the trade deadline.
