Sidney Crosby and Dan Muse watched Game 1 shift fast as the Penguins-Flyers story turned from playoff heat to crowd chaos.

This wasn't just the usual chirping in a bitter rivalry. The tension spilled into the stands at PPG Paints Arena before the night had even settled in.
Reports out of Pittsburgh said two separate fan fights broke out before Game 1 even started. By the time security stepped in, 5 fans had been escorted from the building.
That alone would have been enough to stain the opener. It got worse when word followed that another brawl also broke out in the parking lot.
That's where this story changes. A playoff game between the Penguins and Flyers is supposed to be nasty on the ice, loud in the lower bowl, and tense from puck drop to the final horn.
It's not supposed to become a security story before either club gets rolling in the series. When the crowd becomes the headline, the game itself takes a back seat.

The rivalry crossed the wrong line between the Flyers and Penguins

That's what makes this stand out. Rival fans jawing at each other is part of the deal in a series like this, and nobody is shocked when emotions run high in this matchup.
But once multiple incidents break out in the building and outside it, that stops being playoff energy and starts becoming a problem for both organizations.
"Update: And a parking lot brawl.

Update from PPG Paints Arena:

There's already been 2 fights in the crowd.

5 fan ejections.

And we're 20 minutes away from puck drop.

This is Penguins-Flyers in the playoffs."
The bad look here is obvious. Nationally, it drags attention away from the players, away from the benches, and away from what should be one of the most watchable first-round matchups on the board.
It also puts extra pressure on arena security and on the league's presentation. One ugly night can shape how the rest of the series is viewed, especially if Game 2 carries the same edge in the crowd.
The good news is not every interaction crossed that line. There were still plenty of heated exchanges between Penguins and Flyers fans that stayed verbal and never became physical.
That's the part both sides need to lean on now. This rivalry is already loaded with enough history, enough bad blood, and enough playoff juice without the stands turning into the main event.
