NHL Insider Clarifies How The League Is Addressing The Fate The 2018 WJC Players
Yesterday, the hockey world was shaken when five players were instructed to turn themselves in to the police in London, Ontario, following four NHL players requesting and being granted leave for personal reasons. Many see this as more than a coincidence.
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, here's what the NHL has decided to do with the four players who have taken a leave of absence:
Subject to change, but my understanding of the current situation for the 4 #NHL players who have taken leave of absence:
- Will continue to be paid.
- Continue to count against the salary cap.
- Do not count against the roster limit (e.g. non-roster status).
- Will continue to be paid.
- Continue to count against the salary cap.
- Do not count against the roster limit (e.g. non-roster status).
It's important to note that these conditions are subject to change if new information becomes available. Currently, the NHL has opted to continue paying these players, have their salaries affect the team's salary cap, and allow teams to fill their roster spots without needing an exception.
While some may question the decision to continue paying these players given the circumstances, the NHL seems to be taking a cautious approach, awaiting more information before making a final determination.
