Alex Formenton, 2018 World Juniors player facing charges, steps away from hockey for blue-collar career
The 2018 World Juniors scandal has been a major focus in the hockey world for some time, and one of the players involved, Alex Formenton, seems to have taken an unexpected turn in his life.
While we're still waiting for answers about the five players connected to the scandal, each of them is handling the situation differently. Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod are heading to Europe to play in the KHL, while Carter Hart and Cal Foote are preparing for a return to hockey.
However, Alex Formenton has chosen a different path. After the charges were brought against him, he's reportedly left hockey behind and taken up a blue-collar job instead.
Formenton lives in Barrie, Ont., and has "moved on from a hockey career," the court documents state, but is working full time in construction and getting "ongoing training in the operation of heavy equipment as well as the administration aspects of his new trade."
Many have criticized the fact that some of the players involved continue their hockey careers, but it seems Formenton has accepted his situation and is transitioning to a new profession. Before the charges, he was playing in Switzerland while the others were in the NHL, so this shift away from hockey may not have been entirely by choice. If the charges result in a guilty verdict, we could see more players stepping away from the sport.
For now, the judge has allowed all the players involved to skip pretrial arguments due to «compelling economic reasons,» meaning the full resolution won't come until their trial in 2025.
