Frank Vatrano snapped on the ice while Travis Green watched his Senators push Anaheim around, and Nick Cousins was right in the middle of it.
The temperature jumped late in the second period when Cousins started leaning on Vatrano near the crease. One shove turned into a full-blown scrap before officials stepped in.
Cousins has that reputation around the league. Pest. Agitator. The guy who pokes and chirps until someone loses it.
This time it worked.
Vatrano dropped the gloves and started throwing, clearly furious as the linesman tried to wedge between them. The Ducks winger kept swinging even while being pulled away.
The penalty sheet tells the story of the chaos that followed. At 18:28 of the second, both Cousins and Vatrano took roughing minors after the altercation.
Cousins pushes the line again
Nick Cousins has made a career out of skating along that edge. Every bench in the league knows exactly what he brings: noise, contact, and just enough irritation to drag opponents off their game.
Against Anaheim, he found his target.
Vatrano already had a frustrating night unfolding. Through two periods the Ducks had only 12 shots on goal while Ottawa had piled up 24.
The Senators were also controlling the scoreboard. Michael Amadio opened the scoring, and Thomas Chabot followed with his 7th goal to make it 2-0.
That scoreboard pressure only added fuel to the moment between Cousins and Vatrano.
For Anaheim, the reaction from Vatrano showed how quickly frustration can spill over during a tough road night. The Ducks came in leading the Pacific Division with 75 points, but they looked out of rhythm against Ottawa's pressure.
Meanwhile the Senators needed the push. Sitting at 73 points in the Eastern wild-card chase, every game matters and the bench fed off the energy.
And Cousins? He thrives in exactly these situations.
You could see it in the body language after the officials separated them. Vatrano was still jawing across the ice while Cousins skated away, job done.
Around the NHL, everyone knows the script. Cousins gets under someone's skin.
This time it was Frank Vatrano who took the bait.
