Igor Chernyshov left the game seconds after puck drop as Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis watched a frightening scene unfold at the Bell Centre.

The Sharks rookie winger went down hard after a collision with Mike Matheson along the neutral zone boards early in the first period.
Matheson stepped into the play as both players tracked the puck. Their bodies tangled, and Chernyshov lost his balance.
His head struck the ice violently.
For a moment the Bell Centre went quiet. Players on both benches immediately looked toward the fallen forward.
Chernyshov tried to get back to his skates more than once. Each attempt ended the same way - he stumbled and dropped back down, clearly shaken.
The Sharks medical staff rushed onto the ice almost immediately as teammates waved for help.

A stunned Bell Centre reacts

Trainers stabilized the 20-year-old winger while both teams backed away from the scene. The priority shifted instantly from the game to the player's condition.
Players from the Canadiens bench leaned over the boards watching closely. Several tapped their sticks on the ice as a sign of support.
Mike Matheson stayed nearby, visibly shaken after realizing the impact of the fall. The veteran defenseman waited as trainers worked beside Chernyshov.
The Sharks forward was eventually helped off the ice and guided toward the tunnel leading to the Canadiens dressing room area.
The crowd responded with a long ovation as he exited.
It was a heavy moment only minutes into the night. Hockey arenas are loud places, but the Bell Centre felt unusually quiet during the stoppage.
Chernyshov entered the game with 11 points in 15 games this season, quickly becoming one of San Jose's intriguing young forwards.
But in that moment, none of that mattered.
Both benches were focused on the same thing - hoping the young winger was okay.
Play eventually resumed, though the energy in the building had clearly shifted after the early scare.
