Jacob Melanson gave Lane Lambert's Kraken a real jolt, dropping the gloves with Samuel Helenius the second they got out of the box.

That is what made the sequence stand out.
There was no delay, no fake buildup, just an instant fight the moment both doors opened.
Melanson was taking on a tough matchup too.
Helenius is not an easy customer, and the exchange had some real weight to it from the start.
It also came with a cost.
Melanson looked cut afterward and headed straight down the tunnel for repairs.
That part matters with a player in his role.
Melanson is not in Seattle's lineup to float through quiet shifts.
He has played 35 games this season and has 25 penalty minutes.
That tells you the edge is already part of his game.

Seattle got tested by a player it probably did not expect

For the Kraken, this kind of moment still means something late in the season.
A team notices when a depth winger is willing to jump into a hard situation without hesitation.
Melanson has only 2 goals and 3 assists this year.
So when he makes noise, it is usually coming from energy, bite, and straight-line push.
Helenius brought his own edge into the night.
The Kings forward has 41 penalty minutes in 48 games, so this was never going to be a soft matchup.
That is why Melanson standing in there mattered.
He was not picking a quiet spot. He was taking on a player who plays a hard game himself.
Lane Lambert and Jason Botterill will take note of that kind of response.
Bottom-six players keep jobs by giving a bench something it can feel.
Melanson may not end up remembered for a goal or an assist from this game.
But a fight like that can still leave a mark on a room.
And if the cut on his face is any sign, he paid for it.
Still, Jacob Melanson gave the Kraken exactly what they needed in that moment: some pushback and no fear.
