Alexander Ovechkin and Spencer Carbery weren't part of todays ground-breaking announcement, but NHL fans still connected Sunday's IIHF news to Russia's long Olympic absence.
That matters because the reaction from fans isn't really about fatigue with one long reign.
It's about a chance for a different voice at the top after IIHF president Luc Tardif said he will officially retire and won't seek re-election when his term ends in October, as first relayed Sunday.
This is leading to NHL fans being thrilled, as we can hope to finally witness the league's top Russian stars compete on international ice again with this management change.
A lot of hockey fans believe new leadership could soften the tone around Russia's place in international hockey, even if nothing changes overnight.
That feeling comes from years of watching elite Russian stars stay off the biggest team stage. Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov, Kirill Kaprizov, and others remain massive draws, and plenty of fans want that talent back in a best-on-best event.
Tardif has also been tied directly to the current status quo. On February 4, 2025, the IIHF said Russia and Belarus would not be reincorporated for the 2025-26 championship season, with another review point set for May 2026.
Why fans see an opening now
This is where the excitement comes from. Fans are not celebrating Tardif personally walking out the door.
They're reacting to the idea that a new president could bring a fresh approach to one of the sport's most divisive files.
That said, the facts still matter. Russia and Belarus remained banned from IIHF events into 2026, and Daily Faceoff reported in January that the 2026 Olympic decision remained aligned with that ban.
So this is not a guaranteed return story. It's a hope story.
Fans can respect what Tardif did and still be ready for the next chapter. He helped get NHL players back to the Olympic stage in 2026, something he openly celebrated as part of the IIHF's job.
That's why the reaction feels split in a very hockey way.
Tardif did solid work, especially on major-event stability, but many fans are ready to see whether a new chair behind the desk leads to a different call on Russia.
For now, that's all it is: a door cracked open, not a ruling. Still, after years of international hockey feeling incomplete, fans clearly think this announcement could change the conversation.
