Mike Glemser suffered a severe injury during a hockey game that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Now, he's suing the player who caused the injury, seeking nearly $1 million in damages.
The injury occurred last February during a game in Germany. Glemser, who plays for the Rosenheim Star Bulls, was checked into the boards by Jan-Niklas Pietsch of Riessersee SC. Initially, Glemser didn't blame Pietsch, but he is now taking legal action.
A video of the incident shows Pietsch driving Glemser into the boards behind the net, after which Glemser collapsed and was unable to move.
Glemser's lawyers are seeking damages for his paralysis and the future costs related to his injury. Pietsch's lawyers argue that a ruling against him could have serious consequences for contact sports in Germany.
This case raises important questions about contact sports like hockey: When does a physical play cross the line from fair competition to something more harmful? And who should decide where that line is?
Adding to the tragedy, Pietsch and Glemser were teammates during the 2020-21 season with the Hannover Scorpions. Glemser now faces life in a wheelchair, and a GoFundMe campaign started by fans and fellow players has raised almost $800,000 to support his recovery.
