Rasmus Ristolainen skipped Philadelphia Flyers practice, and the trade deadline paranoia instantly cranked to max.
Kevin Kurz said Tuesday that Ristolainen has not been traded. He also noted the big Finn was not taking part in practice.
That combo is gasoline in early March. Flyers fans have seen this movie before.
When a veteran sits, the first guess is «maintenance.» The second guess is «wrap him in bubble wrap for a deal.»
The timing matters. The NHL trade deadline lands Friday, and Philadelphia is right in the mess of the wild-card chase.
If you want the cleanest explanation, it is simply an injury or a maintenance day. Ristolainen has taken plenty of bumps this year.
If you want the loudest explanation, it is asset protection. Don't risk a freak tweak when you are actively listening on calls.
Rasmus Ristolainen puts the Philadelphia Flyers on alert
You can feel the fanbase spiraling a bit here, because every «not on the ice» moment starts to look like a goodbye.
Daniel Briere also made it clear the Flyers are not shopping for rentals. That usually means the work happens on the sell or hockey-trade side, if anything happens at all.
Ristolainen is 31, a 2013 first-rounder, drafted eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres. That profile still carries weight for teams that want a right-shot, heavy blue-line piece.
He also carries term. He signed a five-year, $25.5 million deal in March 2022, and that cap hit can shape the return and the retention talks.
On the ice this season, he sits at 1-5-6. The minutes are the real selling point, not the points.
So is he the next one being moved. It is possible, but Tuesday's absence alone is not proof.
The next practice, the next skate report, and any roster move that follows will tell the story fast.
