While details have been scarce, the latest reports confirm that the investigation is ongoing. Matt Petgrave, the player involved in the collision with Johnson, has had his bail extended until November 11, 2024.
Johnson's death occurred in October 2023 when he collided with Petgrave during a game. Petgrave's skate accidentally struck Johnson in the neck, leading to his tragic death on the ice in front of 8,000 fans. Johnson, who played 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was just 29 years old.
Though Petgrave was arrested following the incident and later released on bail, he has not yet been formally charged. Johnson's death has prompted several hockey leagues to recommend or require players to wear cut-resistant gear during games.
In memory of Adam Johnson, a commemorative plaque has been installed outside Motorpoint Arena, home of the Nottingham Panthers.
