The standoff between the Toronto Maple Leafs and left winger Nick Robertson is over. The team announced Tuesday that they've agreed to a one-year, $875,000 contract. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was the first to report that both sides were nearing an agreement.
At 23, Robertson was the last restricted free agent the Leafs needed to sign ahead of the new season. Back in July, the Pasadena native had requested a trade, frustrated with his role under former coach Sheldon Keefe, who has since been replaced by Craig Berube.
Last season, Robertson set a personal best with 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games. While he struggled in the playoffs with no points in six games, he impressed with 11 points in nine games for the Toronto Marlies. With Tyler Bertuzzi now in Chicago, Robertson could compete for a spot on the second line and powerplay unit this season. The Leafs originally selected him 53rd overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
In other news, it seems the Leafs are also close to signing free agent Max Pacioretty. The former Montreal Canadiens captain, who has 330 goals and 338 assists over 902 career games, would add veteran depth to Toronto's lineup.
These two moves should provide a solid boost to the Leafs as they prepare for the new season.
