The Dallas Stars banned one fan from American Airlines Center after a video showed what appeared to be a Nazi salute during a December home game.

The move came after an internal review by the team and arena. According to the information provided, the Stars identified the person who purchased the tickets but could not identify the other people seen in the clip.
That detail matters. It means the Stars took action where they could, even if the full group in the video was not confirmed by name.
The team said the ban is indefinite. That makes this more than a warning and turns it into a clear building-level penalty tied to the conduct shown in the video.
“We identified and spoke with the individual that purchased the tickets and will be banning the individual indefinitely from American Airlines Center,” a team spokesperson said in a statement.

The clip was first widely shared on social media about a week before the Stars announced the ban. It was originally posted on Reddit and described a group of male fans seated in the upper deck during Dallas' Dec. 21 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The post said the group repeated the gesture each time the Stars scored. The person who shared the video also said seat numbers were reported to arena management that night.
That is where the story shifts from one disturbing moment to a bigger organizational response. The Stars did not just address the specific ticket holder; they also said they will increase in-arena messaging around the Fan Code of Conduct.

Dallas turns one incident into a policy message

The team also said staff training will be prioritized so arena workers can better identify and handle situations like this. That is an important part of the response because these cases are not only about punishment after the fact.
“Additionally, we are increasing in-arena messaging regarding the Fan Code of Conduct and how our fans can report violations, along with prioritizing staff training to identify and handle situations that arise.

They are also about faster intervention in the building. If fans report discriminatory behavior in real time, the expectation is that security and event staff know what to do and move quickly.
The Stars' statement left little room for interpretation. The team said discriminatory or hateful behavior will not be tolerated and has no place in the arena.
“Any type of discriminatory or hateful behavior will not be tolerated and has no place in our arena. Creating and sustaining environments that are inclusive, safe and respectful is a non-negotiable for the Dallas Stars.”

That lines up with the NHL's fan conduct standards, which prohibit gestures, language, signs, or behavior that demean people based on identity or religion. Under league policy, penalties can include ejection, suspension, or a lifetime ban from NHL events.
The sensitive part here is making sure the focus stays where it belongs. This is not about amplifying the gesture or turning the clip into spectacle. It is about the response to behavior widely understood as hateful and unacceptable.
For the Stars, the bigger consequence is public trust inside the building. Fans need to believe that if something like this happens around them, reporting it will lead to action, not silence.
Dallas has now made its first major move on that front. The ban does not answer every question from the video, but it does send a direct message about where the team stands.
