Noah Dobson may have just handed Martin St-Louis a playoff problem Montreal can't hide.
The Canadiens were already dealing with the sting of a bad loss.
Now the bigger story is on the blue line, where Dobson's status has become the issue hanging over everything.
Missing one late-season game is manageable.
Missing the opening round is something else, and that's where the concern is starting to land around Montreal.
But it's confirmed to be a lot more worrying than just that.
The timing is brutal, the margin is thin, and the club is running out of regular-season runway.
Dobson isn't just another defenseman in the mix.
He's one of the pieces. St. Louis leans on when the game gets fast and the bench gets shorter.
The original concern was tied to Montreal's matchup with the New York Islanders, Dobson's former team. But the fear now stretches well past one night.
Dobson is officially out for at least 2 weeks, and further evaluation at that point is required.
"Defenseman Noah Dobson sustained an upper-body injury and will be re-evaluated in two weeks."
The Noah Dobson update Canadiens fans feared is here
They'll have to spread the workload, patch the minutes, and hope the group can survive the strain.
That puts more heat on Arber Xhekaj and Jayden Struble.
Both could be asked to absorb tougher usage at the worst possible time of year.
And that changes the playoff picture right away.
A thinner blue line affects breakouts, matchups, special teams, and how aggressive St. Louis can be with the rest of the bench.
Dobson has 47 points in 80 games this season, which tells you exactly how much puck movement and offense Montreal could lose if this drags on.
That's why this story hits harder than a normal injury update.
For the Canadiens, this isn't about discomfort or caution anymore.
