Insider Elliotte Friedman Shocks Everyone And Links Chris Tanev To Surprising Team

Insider Elliotte Friedman surprised everyone during Saturday night's intermission linking Chris Tanev to an unlikely team.

Earlier this week, Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios expressed the team's focus on acquiring complete players and seasoned professionals to support their young squad. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, one such player on the Senators' radar is veteran Calgary Flames defenseman Chris Tanev.

Friedman highlighted Tanev as a top name when considering experienced professionals in the NHL, making him a logical target for the Senators.

"It makes a lot of sense, when you talk about pros in the NHL, Tanev is one of the top names you come up with," Friedman said on Hockey Night in Canada's Saturday Headlines segment. "He makes perfect sense to be on Ottawa's radar, and he is."

However, Friedman suggested that Ottawa might not be Tanev's preferred destination due to the team's current position in the standings.

"I don't know what the possibilities of this are at this time; I think Chris Tanev would probably prefer a playoff scenario this year," Friedman said. "For this year, the Senators are not a playoff team; we will see about the future. But I do think he's one of the names on their radar."

Tanev has been a subject of trade rumors throughout the season, especially with the Calgary Flames facing a slump. As the March 1 trade deadline approaches, Tanev could become a sought-after target if the Flames decide to make moves.

In the current season, the 34-year-old defenseman has recorded one goal, eight assists, and boasts a plus-7 rating in 45 games.
