Elliotte Friedman Leaks Failed Trade Between The Oilers And Canadiens
In a recent revelation, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared that the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers came close to a trade involving goaltender Jake Allen.
The Oilers, facing goaltending challenges earlier in the season, actively sought a netminder after sending Jack Campbell to the minors. According to Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, there was a period when he believed Jake Allen would join the Oilers.
"I really do think there was a time this year that I thought Jake Allen was gonna be in Edmonton," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "Now I'm not convinced that's going to happen."
Friedman explained that the deal likely fell through due to the cost. During the Oilers' goalie search, the Canadiens were reportedly asking for a high price, possibly a draft pick and additional salary retention.
"I think what's happened there is that he's got a price that he's set, I think it's a draft pick," said Friedman.
"There's the trade price and then there's the retention price," admitted Friedman. "And the price gets higher if there's retention."
Oilers fans might now be relieved that the team didn't rush into acquiring a goaltender during their early-season struggles. Despite Jack Campbell's return to form being uncertain, Stuart Skinner has performed admirably as Edmonton's number one goalie, contributing to the team's impressive climb in the standings.
