The Penguins have proven that they are committed to winning as long as Crosby and Malkin are on the team. This year might be their last good shot as a long playoff run as their core players only get older. Kyle Dubas brought in Erik Karlsson in a massive move over the summer, indicating that the team is all-in on this core.
One player that could be on his way out of Pittsburgh is Rickard Rakell. Rakell has just 3 assists through 12 games this year but has proven himself to still be a legit middle or even top-six option as recently as last year. However, the Penguins reportedly want a forward with more net front presence and they may be willing to trade Rakell to acquire someone new.
Despite his past performaces, team may not be entirely sold on a 30-year old Rakell with just 3 points in 12 games. The Slow start could hurt his trade value but it also puts the team in a bind as they are not going to want to keep playing him if he's not producing.
While Rakell is bound to find his goal scoring touch at some point, one has to wonder how long his leash is. If the Penguins feel they can make a hockey trade that improves their team and it involves trading Rakell, they are sure to do it in a heartbeat. While they are reportedly looking for a net front player, the team can also use help on defense so Dubas will have options to choose from on the trade market. We already know he's not afraid to make a splash.
