The insider Elliotte Friedman reported a major twist emerged about a trade involving the Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar ahead of the NHL deadline.

With the clock ticking toward Friday's 3 p.m. deadline, most organizations are officially in negotiation mode.
Among the teams who appear poised to be sellers, the Calgary Flames, following yet another disappointing season that has them buried in the Pacific Division standings, look poised to ship out more players after they already moved Rasmus Andersson earlier this year.
MacKenzie Weegar has been in the rumors for a while now, with several contenders eyeing his heavy minutes and right-shot utility. However, the situation escalated quickly on Wednesday afternoon.
Now, Elliotte Friedman made an update that shifted the entire market.

Elliotte Friedman confirms MacKenzie Weegar trade likely looming

The veteran blueliner is heavily linked to Utah, a team desperate to bolster its top four for a late playoff push.
The proposal is now in his hands. Because Weegar holds a full no-trade clause, the deal cannot be finalized without his green light, per Friedman.
For Calgary, moving Weegar would signal a total commitment to a long-term rebuild.
The 32-year-old has expressed a desire to stay in Calgary in the past, but the lure of a playoff race in Salt Lake City might be too strong to ignore. The Utah Mammoth are currently holding a wild-card spot and need stability on the back end.
Conroy is likely looking for at least one high-end prospect in return. If Weegar waives, it would be the biggest trade of the deadline so far.
The locker room is reportedly on edge as they wait for the decision. A "yes" from Weegar changes the landscape of the Western Conference, but the Flames' plans as well.
They won't do it unless they get the right return.
