The Calgary Flames 2022-23 season was a disaster, and with seven pending UFA's for the summer of 2024, they appeared to be ready to move on from all of them.
While they traded Tyler Toffoli for the younger Yegor Sharangovich, the Flames haven't made any more moves on those names, and now, extension talks have begun with yet another veteran.
According to a report, the Flames have now engaged with Mikael Backlund on extension talks, despite reports earlier in the summer that he was interested in being traded from Calgary.
Backlund was drafted by the Flames way back in 2007, and he's spent his entire season in Calgary, becoming a fan favourite who posted a career year in 2023-24, and now, it appears that an extension would come with the captaincy.
Ultimately, it appears they aren't close yet on a deal, as one won't become official in the next few days, but ahead of the 2023-24 season, locking in a captain for the first time since Mark Giordano makes sense, so keep an eye on this space.
