The Calgary Flames have had a solid start to the 2023-24 season, but with a pending batch of UFA's, it appears that a re-tool may be their best course of action going forward.
«To date, [GM Craig] Conroy has not approached Markstrom or his agent Pat Morris about the possibility of waiving his NMC. I'm told that will only happen if the Flames receive an offer they deem acceptable. There is belief out there that Markstrom would consider a trade to a contender, but that has not been confirmed on my end,"
That comes from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, and while no teams have been named as officially having contacted Calgary, they are showing a willingness to move him if the right deal comes along.
A wide open goaltender market at the trade deadline
At the trade deadline, there's many contenders including Edmonton, New Jersey, Toronto and others that are looking for goaltender help, so it's easy to assume they may check in at some point.
Ultimately, the Flames haven't yet approached Markstrom about waiving his NMC to get a deal done, but the sense is that he's open to playing for a contender, so if the right deal appears, look for Calgary to make a splash move or two.
