Connor McDavid's teammate called out his line for the lack of retaliation following the Edmonton Oilers captain's injury.
Last night, the Oilers suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets, but lost much more than two points, as Connor McDavid left the ice only a few seconds after the start of the first period. He tried to enter the offensive zone but was hit on the skates with a stick and fell alongside the boards. He remained on the ice for a few seconds but never came back in the game after that shift.
After the game, McDavid's linemate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins stated that they must do a better job stepping up for their captain when he gets injured by an opponent:
"Yeah, I mean of course. he's our leader, and also the best player in the game. Of course, you're going to feel it. We got to do a better job of stepping up when a guy like that goes down, though."
"It's tough, anytime you are playing without your best player, but it's something that's hopefully short term. Obviously, our team is going to look different. Maybe that's one, two games."It's your captain, your best player. It should be an opportunity for guys to step up and say, ''Oh, I've got this.'' It's more ice time, more opportunities."
With McDavid returning to Edmonton to be evaluated, the Oilers will need to review their game plan as they prepare to face the Nashville Predators on Thursday night.
