Angela Price, the wife of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, has sparked controversy with comments made on social media regarding the 2024 Summer Olympics.
On her Instagram, Price responded to a question about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has faced criticism and unverified questions about her gender identity. Price mocked Khelif by posting a photoshopped image of boxer Mike Tyson in a wig, referencing the gender identity questions.
Price's response to the question about Khelif was:
«That saying 'common sense isn't very common these days'....a woman will never be able to compete at the same level as a man and I think it is heart breaking for these women born athletes, heartbreaking! do you, dress and act however you like but there are limits.»
Questions about Khelif's fairness in the sport emerged on social media following a claim from the International Boxing Association (IBA), a Russian boxing federation, that Khelif failed a gender eligibility test in 2023. This led to allegations that Khelif was male. A quick win against Italian boxer Angela Carini further fueled social media outrage, including comments from Elon Musk and U.S. Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance.
Khelif, who identifies as female and has not stated publicly that she is biologically male, called the IBA's claims an "injustice." Algeria, where Khelif is from, has strict laws against LGBT+ rights, including gender identity and transitioning.
The IOC has supported Khelif, noting her participation in the 2020 Olympics, where she did not medal, and the IBA's refusal to release their findings on Khelif's tests. The IOC states that Khelif and fellow questioned boxer Lin Yu-ting met the eligibility criteria to compete. Khelif has since defeated Hungarian boxer Anna Luca Hamori to advance to the medal round of the Olympics women's welterweight competition.
