The Canadiens were back on the ice last night after a few days of practice. They looked forward to bounce back from their four straight losses and they did it in great fashion, as they beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2.
Everyone on the team seemed to be on the same page. They were finally organized and were able to put on a great team effort against the Blues, despite all the speculation surrounding Martin St. Louis' position in Montreal and Arber Xhekaj's potential trade request.
A few days ago, the Canadiens announced Arber Xhekaj's return to the lineup after being healthy scratched for the past two games. Back then, St. Louis sent a strong message to Xhekaj, saying he expected him to be better during a press conference:
"I mean you should be worried about making a couple of mistakes, right? You know, he's not a rookie anymore, so you should be "I got to be better", very simple. It's not like we nitpick anything he does, but he's got to be better, I expect a better version, I expect Xhekaj to be a better version."
Xhekaj played well last night. For the first time in the season, he spent over 20 minutes on the ice. St. Louis appreciated his effort and didn't shy away from speaking his truth in his post-game comments.
Here's what he said:
"I thought he (Arber Xhekaj) was excellent, throughout the gameThe stuff that we talked about that kept him out, I felt like tonight he was very engaged in applying everything that we've been working on, talking with. So I'm happy for him."
