On day two of the 2024 NHL Draft, reports suggest that the Red Wings and Rangers are working on a trade to bring Michigan native Jacob Trouba to Detroit.
According to Larry Brooks at the New York Post, the details of what New York would receive in return are still unclear. The Rangers are likely to retain some of Trouba's salary:
«We [New York Post] are told the Rangers may retain $2.5 million per year on the two remaining seasons of Trouba's $8M annual cap charge. That represents 31.25 percent retention that would also be applied to the $12M in salary Trouba has coming over the next two seasons.»
«Indeed, a well-placed source has told The Post that #NYR GM Chris Drury is working on a deal to send the captain (Trouba) to #LGRW, a trade that the Michigan native would presumably accept after having played as a freshman for the Wolverines in 2012-13.»
Trouba, who turns 31 in February, is a right-shot defenseman known for his physical play and big hits, although not always clean. He has shown offensive skills and posted 22 points (3 goals, 19 assists) in 69 games last season. If the trade goes through, it will be interesting to see what the Red Wings give up to bring Trouba back to his home state.
