Patrick Roy is one of the greatest goalies to ever play the game of hockey. While his playing days are long gone, he's remained active in the sport as a coach across multiple leagues, including the NHL and the QMJHL, where he recently stepped down from the head coaching position for the Quebec Remparts. Now he may be on his way back to the NHL.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on 32 thoughts today that one of the ownership groups vying to but the Senators was highly interested in bringing in Patrick Roy as the head coach. He does not know which ownership group that was though, whether it was Andlauer, or one of the other groups.
The Senators record is not horrible at 4-6 through 10 games, but its only good enough for last place in the tough Atlantic division. Interestingly, the team does have a better goal differential than three other teams in the division, suggesting they could be due for some positive regression with their schedule. Usually, goal differential is actually a better indicator of future success than a team's record.
That being said, Roy's record as a head coach in the NHL is much better than Smith's at this point in his career. The former goaltender is also coming off a Memorial Cup winning season, adding another accolade to his impressive resume. Should the Senators seek his services he could possibly give the team a much needed boost early in the season.
