John Tortorella reacts after Matvei Michkov hits the Michigan attempt at practice

First-round pick Matvei Michkov is aiming to make the Philadelphia Flyers roster out of training camp, but he might want to be cautious around head coach John Tortorella.
As the 2024-25 season approaches, Michkov's development will be something to watch. The 19-year-old was selected seventh overall in the NHL Draft and has the talent to make an impact. However, a big question is how Michkov will mesh with Tortorella's tough, no-nonsense coaching style. Early signs suggest he may already be off to a rocky start.
During a Flyers scrimmage, Michkov, known for his flashy plays, attempted a Michigan move, a trick shot Tortorella has publicly criticized as bad for the game. The move prompted Tortorella to glance at his coaching staff, who were reportedly laughing at the situation.
The effort excited fans, showcasing Michkov's confidence on North American ice. However, head coach John Tortorella didn't seem as impressed with the flashy play.
Despite this, Flyers GM Danny Brière is excited about Michkov learning from Tortorella.
'I know I've said this a few times before, but the chance to have him learn under Torts, we all know know that he's gifted offensively, very, very talented, but he's going to have the chance to learn under Torts to play the other side of the ice as well, and that gets me excited. He's going to get that base early on. I think it's just going to make him better for the rest of his career.'
Michkov has a great chance to become a star as the Flyers rebuild, but his success will depend on finding common ground with Tortorella. Their relationship will be a key storyline this season.
Michkov is confirmed to play in Friday's Rookie Series game against the New York Rangers at 7:05 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the game live on the Flyers website.
