The Pittsburgh Penguins are in an odd spot as an organization. The team is struggling to remain competitive as their core continues to get older. Now one of their players is gone for good after he mutually agreed to part ways with the team.

Andreas Johnsson Leaves Penguins, Signs With SHL Team

Johnsson signed a one-year deal worth 800k with the Pittsburgh Penguins this offseason after a disappointing year in which he was traded from the Devils to the Sharks as part of the Timo Meier trade. Johnsson's disappointing performances continued in preseason as the Penguins ultimately cut him, sending him down to the American Hockey League. Instead of reporting to the club, Johnsson began working on a deal to go back to Sweden. He is now set to sign with Skellefteå AIK of the SHL on Wednesday following the official termination of his contract.

Johnsson's NHL Career Comes To An End

While it is not impossible for the 28-year-old to make a comeback to the NHL, it is very unlikely. His three-year deal with Skellefteå AIK takes him until his age 31 season. Not many NHL players are still playing in the league at that age anyways, especially depth players. Those that are still in the league generally start to see age-related decline in their play. Only the very best players such as Sidney Crosby seem to be capable of holding off father time. Johnsson can hold his head up high for his career accomplishments though. 259 games played and 116 points for a former 7th round draft pick is no joke.
