As a rookie this season, Shea participated in 31 games but only tallied one point. However, he contributed 24 hits, 24 blocks, and 17 shots.

During the Penguins final push for a playoff spot in April, Shea started in all nine games, indicating the coaching staff's growing trust in him. To retain Shea in a third-pairing role for next season, the team must extend his contract before July 1 to avoid losing him to another team.
