Becoming an NHL player is tough, but staying there is even harder. This was meant to be Nick Robertson's breakout year, moving from prospect to regular player. However, due to a lack of performance and his waiver eligibility, he was sent back to the American Hockey League (AHL).
Although the Maple Leafs didn't make him play any AHL games, Robertson expressed dissatisfaction with the decision. Because of his limited NHL experience, sending him down was an easy choice for the team.
Now, the Maple Leafs have called Robertson back up, and he recently spoke to the media about his situation.
Robertson, aged 22, has played 41 games this season, scoring 8 goals and assisting on 11 others. Despite recent improvement, he went pointless in his last three games and hasn't been very effective.
It's understandable for Robertson to feel this way, but it's interesting that he voiced his concerns publicly. As a young player still fighting for a regular spot, he may feel his place is guaranteed. There were rumors in the summer that he wanted a trade, and if his ice time doesn't increase, he might seek one again this summer.
