NHL insider Pierre LeBrun revealed today that both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner are adopting a "wait and see" approach before discussing a contract extension or trade.

This summer, Mitch Marner has been the main topic of conversation in Toronto. Following the Leafs' playoff elimination, many assumed the team would trade him, finally breaking up the core-four. However, recent rumors suggest otherwise. It's looking more likely that Marner will stay with the Leafs, at least for the start of the 2024-25 season. Marner's agent confirmed they haven't discussed potential trades or contract extensions yet.

Marner plans to honor the final year of his contract with the Leafs.

Despite fan speculation, Mitch Marner's camp is not pursuing trade options or contract extensions. His agent, Darren Ferris, has confirmed there are no active discussions about a potential trade or extension this summer. Instead, Marner aims to start the upcoming season and evaluate the situation as it unfolds.

This aligns with what Elliotte Friedman mentioned. On his show "32 Thoughts," he discussed the situation between Marner and the Leafs, stating that while he couldn't predict the outcome, the team is handling the situation with extreme caution. They know they can't afford to make a mistake.

"The Leafs are determined to either make a good trade, or, with the cap room that is created by that is created by that trade, do something big. They know they can't afford to have a swing and a miss with this one."

Mismanaging a player of Marner's caliber could set the team back years and potentially affect their chances of winning a Stanley Cup. The Leafs have a lot at stake and need to handle this situation carefully, even if it feels like a lose-lose situation.
