Mitch Marner's absence from the ice has stretched beyond initial expectations, prompting the Maple Leafs to acknowledge that his injury may be more serious than first reported.
Marner Injury More Serious Then Originally Thought
When Marner was sidelined after a clash with the Boston Bruins on March 7th, Keefe described it as a "day-to-day" issue. However, with Marner still sidelined nine days later, Keefe conceded that the situation has evolved.
"It's more than that at this point," admitted Keefe. "He won't skate tomorrow and then we have a day off so a couple days for him to settle and sort of ramp it back up for next week."
While the Maple Leafs haven't officially disclosed Marner's injury, speculation points to a high ankle sprain. Recovery times for such injuries vary widely in the NHL.
Dr. Ali Rendely highlighted that the league's average for recovery from a high ankle sprain is around 8 games, but the range is vast, spanning from zero to as many as 65 games missed. With Marner having missed only two games so far, it suggests he could be out for a considerable period.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
