Parker Kelly gave Jared Bednar's Avalanche one of the strangest moments of the night, grabbing the puck and throwing it out of the zone by hand on the penalty kill.

There was no arguing that call.
Once Kelly closed his hand on the puck and tossed it, the penalty was automatic under the handling rule.
That is what made the whole sequence so unusual.
You almost never see a player go that far with it, especially in a pressure spot on the kill.
And Kelly knew it right away.
As he headed to the box, the frustration spilled over and he smashed his stick on the glass.
That reaction said plenty.
It was not confusion. It was a player realizing he had handed the officials a call they could not pass on.
Colorado can usually live with edge and emotion from depth players.
But this was one of those moments where compete crossed into a completely avoidable mistake.
The Avalanche are 53-16-11 and gearing up for the playoffs, so little breakdowns like that stand out more now.

The mistake hurt, but the reaction told the bigger story

Kelly's anger was easy to understand.
A weird penalty is one thing, but a self-inflicted one on the penalty kill is the kind that sticks with a player.
That is why the stick smash fit the moment.
He was furious because there was no bad bounce to blame and no gray area in the rule.
For Bednar's group, the lesson is simple at this time of year.
Play hard, play fast, but do not hand away free chances over a brain cramp.
Colorado has the offensive firepower to erase a lot of mistakes.
But playoff hockey has a way of punishing the dumb ones harder than the unlucky ones.
Kelly will not be the first player to lose his cool after a trip to the box.
Still, this one will get replayed because of how rare it looked and how obvious the whistle was.
The clip was funny in the moment.
Inside the room, it probably felt more like a reminder that the smallest lapse can turn into a problem fast.
