NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman recently made a major statement about the importance of hockey in Canada, though he didn't seem entirely convinced himself.
He pointed out that Amazon Prime, the NHL's new major partner, clearly sees great value in hockey in Canada.
Prime Video is showing strong support for its new project of broadcasting NHL games, and we may see some big changes in the coming years. It's no surprise they are focusing on Canadian markets.
Bettman: "When you look at the overall investment from Prime in us, it really makes us happy about how much they value hockey in Canada."
It's clear that Amazon Prime will play an increasingly important role in Canadian hockey, with live streaming of games starting next month.
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, the first game Amazon Prime will broadcast is on October 14, featuring a matchup at the Bell Centre between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's definitely something to look forward to.
"The first broadcast of Amazon Prime Monday Night Hockey will take place on October 14 in Montreal, with the Canadiens facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins."
This marks a major shift for the NHL, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Maybe Bettman's friends at Amazon Prime could teach him a thing or two about the importance of hockey in Canada, it might even help with future expansion plans.
