During the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks game today, an unexpected incident occurred.
Referee Forced To Leave Game After Getting Hit In The Face With The Puck
Blackhawks winger Boris Katchouk attempted a short side shot on net, but missed completely. Unfortunately, the puck struck referee Furman South directly in the face, causing him to bleed on the ice.
Oh man, referee Furman South just took a puck to the head off a Boris Katchouk shot. #Blackhawks
MacKenzie Entwistle of the Blackhawks promptly called for a trainer. It appeared that the puck hit South on the right side of his face, causing his visor to be pushed in and leaving him with blood on his forehead.
Fortunately, medical staff responded swiftly. The game proceeded with one referee and two linesmen for the rest of the 1st period until we saw Furman South back for the 2nd period.
Chicago is hosting a "Best Day Ever" promotion, but unfortunately, this isn't the case for Furman South.
Do you think referees should wear full cages for protection?
